Here’s the final stage of the spaniel portrait. They look very handsome!

Everything is pretty much finished except the background.

I added more details to the fur and then finished the background. Hope you enjoyed this painting.

Spaniels-Stage 3

I am going to add Stage 3 today of the French Brittany Spaniel portraits. These are very distinctive dogs. Very beautiful coats.

I am continuing to work on the fur of the first dog, adding highlights now. I am also adding the background around the dogs using blues and greens. I will post the finished portrait next.

French Brittany Spaniels -Stage 2

In this next stage of the portrait, I have added some of the grassy area around the dogs. I have almost finished Maquis’s head and ears and now I am working on his body, developing his coat. I have also completed his collar. I am working from left to right to avoid dragging my hand across any finished areas of the pastel.

French Brittany Spaniels

I am starting a new portrait today. This one is of a beautiful pair of French Brittany Spaniels named Jean Luc and Maquis. Both dogs are black which always presents challenges as well as opportunity.

I began on a grey sheet of velour with a drawing in pencil and black pastel.Heres, the first stage.

After taking many photographs of the dogs and with the owners help with photos as well, I came up with this composition. I already have a good start on the dogs faces. I put the eyes in almost from the beginning. Some artists wait till last but if the eyes aren’t right there is no point in continuing.

Slugger_The Finish

Here is the final painting of Slugger.

I was very pleased with the finished painting. It is always fun to add the final lights and details and see them come to life. let me know if you have questions.

I am continuing to work on Slugger. I begin adding color to him.

I add lots of warm tones to the white fur where it reflects the warmth of the table and cool colors in the upper part of his body under his neck.

This is a portrait of a wonderful cat named Slugger. Here’s what Slugger’s owner has to say about him:

“Slugger approached humans with affection–he always had lovin’ to give. Slugger was not an indoor cat– except to sleep and give/get attention.
We brought Slugger home after a friend called to say his neighbors moved, left their cat behind and it was fighting with his cats. Slugger did not like other cats, which is how he got his name. He had little tolerance for our other cat, Gamer, and occasionally gave him a whoopin’. ”

Here is the beginning drawing of Slugger:

I started with a black and white drawing. Then I began with a dramatic background color. In this picture I have added the eyes and began to develope the table he is laying on. I should have stopped to take pictures sooner but was having too much fun painting!

Barney -The Finish

I wanted to show you the finished painting of Barney.

I have finished by adding the details. I also worked on his fur to add more definition. I added the long black hairs in his ears, deepened the shadows and made sure that his teeth weren’t too white.
